For this project, we were told to discover an artist from the 20th and 21st centuries that we had never learned about before. We were then told to take ourselves and put us in one of their paintings, or to paint ourselves in the artist's style. I chose Meredith Frampton, a British artist from the early 1900s who tended to paint portraits of the wealthy. He was very much influenced by his father, and though his career was short lived and his pieces few, they leave an impression on the viewer.
I chose Portrait of a Young Woman 1935 by Mr. Frampton. I chose this painting because when I first viewed this oil on canvas, I thought that is was a photograph. The woman in the portrait seemed to be hiding something, and she seemed to be upset about something that was unseen. This left an impression on me that encouraged me to learn more. I love the way the artist blends the paint together in a seamless fashion, and how he would chose every little detail in each piece. He chose the dress from a Vogue pattern and had his mother make it, he chose the background, and he chose every element in his painting such as the table.
I learned that painting is much MUCH harder than it appears. I had trouble blending and and adding shadows and highlights to this painting. I also learned that I can take images and change them to represent me. For example, I chose the running bibs, the notebook, and the flowers because they represent me. I like having something in a painting or piece of art that represents me and leaves my mark in the piece. I also learned that even though an artist may have few pieces, sometime those pieces are better and fuller and richer than the pieces produced by artists who create hundreds of pieces.
Here is my Prezi for Mr. Frampton:
