For this project, we need to incorporate two medias (I had gloss medium and old postcards), an artist's style (I got Sol LeWitt), and two subjects (I got addiction and poetry). I incorporated Sol's style and the postcards as a background. I placed tape down on the hardboard surface, in a pattern similar to one that Sol would use. I then painted over some of the areas, and alternated between using a black, covered section and a section filled with the postcards. However, I ended up painting over them. I wanted it to represent the confusion and anger that comes with addiction, and how poetry can express that. In order to do this, I used bright, vivid colors (similar to colors that Sol used in his work), and used them in a way that was raw and unblended. I then would add sheets with poetry printed on them (my original poetry), and then add a few more layers of paint.
I am very happy with the result of this project. It is the first project I have had in school where I had total control over everything in a piece. I decided how I wanted to represent these topics, how to incorporate the medias, and how I wanted to express Sol's style. I am very happy with the outcome. To me, it seems more mature than some of my other pieces. In the future, I want to use this style- the layering and the bright, vivid colors. The layering adds some unique features. Even though the postcard layer ended up being covered, it provided a unique texture to the surface of this work, as did the paint and the poetry sheets.
Below are some images of Sol's work for comparison.
